Micro and Macro Perspectives on Private Savings in Türkiye – June 11, 2008



This conference is co-organized with TÜSİAD, and in the conference, the Research Report  “The Evolution and Determinants of the Turkish Private Saving Rate:  What Lessons for Policy?” has been presented by Caroline Van Rijckeghem and Murat Üçer. The report looks into the evolution and determinants of the saving rate in Türkiye, with a particular focus on private savings. In an attempt to find out the reasons of the sharp reduction in the private savings rate in recent years, it analyzes the macro development of private savings in Türkiye in an historical and international context, while taking into account the key importance of demographic factors and  on the micro side, the household savings trends. It draws lessons for policy and examines policy options in the taxation and pension area.
Professor Christopher Carroll from Johns Hopkins University, who is renown for his research on consumption and saving behavior, was the key note speaker of the conference.

In the panel session, the speakers; Burcu Duygan-Bump from Federal Reserve Boston, Hasan Ersel from Sabanci University, Ayşe İmrohoroglu from the University of Southern California  and Insan Tunali from Koç University, discussed the recent trends in Turkish private savings as well as commenting on the report.
